EORI Number: United Kingdom, Finland, Netherlands, Estonia, Malta

In all EU countries, the procedure for obtaining an EORI number for companies is more or less similar, as it is subject to Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council (EU) No. 952/2013 of 09.10.2013 and the European Commission’s guidance on the EORI system. Earlier in the article about EORI, we have already described the procedure for registering this number in Cyprus, and today we will do the same for some of the most popular jurisdictions.

United Kingdom

Although the UK has decided to leave the EU, its registration procedure in the EORI system remains the same and meets the requirements of EU legislation. Before receiving an EORI number, the company must register for VAT purposes (if the taxable transactions threshold of GBP85.000 is exceeded). The application for EORI number is submitted online through the Gateway system, in which the company or her agent must be registered. The application contains basic information about the applicants and the exported/imported goods. The EORI number is issued in 2-5 days.

Finland

Finland accepts applications for registration in EORI system online. The application in the form of the Finnish customs authority Tulli must be completed accordingly and sent by e-mail to h.eori@tulli.fi. The standard registration period is 2 working days.

Netherlands

By default companies registered in the Netherlands do not need to obtain EORI number separately. By adding the letters NL to the beginning of its tax number, the company gets a ready-to-use EORI number. If the tax number consists of less than 9 digits, you will also need to add zero to the beginning of the number (but after the letters). In the case of filing a customs declaration outside the Netherlands, the company will still need to go through the standard registration procedure in the EORI system. Like Finland, the Netherlands accepts applications for registration in the EORI system by email. The relevant form must be filled out in electronic form, printed out, signed and sent as an attachment to the letter to the address eori.aanvragen@belastingdienst.nl.

Estonia

The application is submitted online via eMTA (e-Tax Board/e-Customs) system, where you may also find very useful guidelines on how to apply. The registration period is 3 days.

Malta

Residents of Malta who wish to obtain EORI number must make an appropriate request by e-mail eori.customs@gov.mt. The request must be accompanied by VAT certificate, MFSA certificate and ID/passport of one of the directors (foreign). Local directors only need to specify their full name and ID number in the request. Also, in the letter, you must specify the current email address of the company, to which you will receive a confirmation of registration, and a contact phone number.
